Brand new to our line-up of offerings at Sterling, is our Athletic Equestrian League (AEL) Team.  Team membership is open to Sterling lesson students in grades 4th-12th.  The AEL is almost like a cross between The United States Pony Club programs and the Interscholastic Equestrian League.  Participating in this program is an excellent chance to affordably delve into the world of horse showing and to learn a whole lot along the way!  Team membership is only $75 annually (not including lesson or show fees) and members only need a team polo shirt, riding breeches and boots (or half chaps and paddock boots) to show.  Team members DO NOT need their own horses or tack.

Rider's in the AEL are judged against a set of standards, both on the flat and over fences, and receive a score on their ride.  In addition, each athlete completes an unmounted practicum, and that score is added to their mounted score.  Each rider receives a flat score (40 points), a fences score (40 points), and a practicum score (20 points), and all three scores are added together for their score for the day.  Each athlete takes home a copy of their score sheets that include judge's comments.  Rider's in the AEL ride the "host" team's horses at competition, they do not bring their own mounts.

Levels in the AEL include Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Open.  Beginner riders show over ground poles and the top fence height for Open is 2'6".
